Greennovate, together with FedEx Wuhan, finished another GECKO program at two schools in Hubei Province: Xinzhou No. 2 and Huangpi No. 2 High Schools. We visited each of the schools four times, reaching over 500 students. Highlights of the program included instituting a recycling program to separate waste and a competition to weave used plastic bags into useful handicrafts.
FedEx employees were trained to teach lessons and manage activities. They assisted us in teaching about environmental footprints, carrying capacity, population, and energy challenges. To maximize the relevance of the program on student’s daily lives, we focused not only on how students could reduce their environmental footprints through everyday actions, but also on the kinds of environmentally related career opportunities that would be available for them in the future.
We have recruited some of the most involved students to form a “green team” to serve as environmental ambassadors for their schools. We remain in regular contact with them to pass along interesting projects and stay updated on their progress.
