GECKO – An innovative approach to environmental awareness in China

Who We Are

A large population, rapid industrialization and economic rise are taking their toll on China’s environment. GECKO was established as a non-profit initiative of sustainability consultancy, Greennovate, to answer the need of raising environmental awareness amongst China’s youth.

Since 2008, GECKO has been providing innovative environmental educational programs to high schools, inspiring students to become green ambassadors to their own communities. GECKO also contributes to their potential career choices by bridging them with local industries supportive of environmental progress in working towards a sustainable future. Thus far, GECKO has reached out to 20,285 students in 101 schools in 14 provinces throughout the country.

To expand its outreach to a wider audience, GECKO has been developed into GECKO Online, a series of online environmental lectures designed to connect the dots on relevant topics of sustainability for anyone with a keen green interest (regardless of age). It is an e-learning platform that is taking GECKO to the next level.

How We’ve Grown

GECKO started as a small internal initiative. Owing to Greennovate’s commitment and the positive feedback received from the community, GECKO has grown beyond what was initially envisioned.  Funding is derived from the Corporate Train the Trainer program, which helps to develop and scale up its impact through community outreach. To successfully implement the program in cities around China, Greennovate partners with local grassroots organizations and university students.
